PUNE: Hours after his nephew Ajit Pawar split the party he co-founded in June 1999, Sharad Pawar declared he would remain "the face of NCP".Pawar said he saw the move by Ajit and his fellow dissenters to join the Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government as "a clean chit" to many of these leaders who had been nervous about central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate going after them ever since PM Narendra Modi accused them of corruption.

"So, if the credit for this split has to be given to anyone, I will give it to PM Narendra Modi.

I am thankful to PM Modi for giving this clean chit."Will take action against dissenters: NCP chiefNCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that while he wouldn't legally contest his nephew Ajit Pawar usurping 'NCP' name and symbol, the party would initiate action against the dissenters joining the Shiv Sena-BJP government."As a party, we hadn't taken any decision to support the Shinde-Fadnavis government.

So, anybody who has done so has gone against the party's stand, and will face action," he said.

Pawar said some MLAs had reached out to him, saying that they were taken to Raj Bhavan on Sunday against their wishes and forced to sign support letters."We will go to the people and try to garner their support for us, our stand and our ideology.

Party workers are our real strength.

They are fighting for us and are upset.

Nobody will take away my right to talk to people," Pawar said, adding that he will will start from Satara.Pawar said he was "unaware" that Ajit had resigned as the leader of the opposition of the state assembly on Friday itself.

"He (Ajit) has not given a letter to the party.

He must have given the paper to the speaker of the house (in the assembly).

The speaker has the power to appoint the leader of the opposition."Pawar said he would speak to Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders on the appointment of a new leader of the opposition.

Which party will get the post will be decided on the basis of numbers in the assembly, he pointed out.Pawar said he was "not worried about leaders leaving the party" as it was not new to him.

A similar exodus had happened in the past.

"I am not worried about my party's future, but I am worried about the election of the leaders who have left the party now," he added.Pawar said BJP leaders and those who were hoping to get ministerial berths appeared worried during Sunday's oath ceremony. The NCP chief said that as the person at the helm, he had given the appointment letters of general secretary to Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare. On whether his nephew's exit from the party would cause a rift in the family, Pawar said he was neither upset with Patel nor his nephew.

"The party has split, but the home is intact," he said. The NCP split will not hamper efforts to form a united front against BJP at the national level, Pawar added.
