Sri Lanka

The leader of Sri Lankas Catholic Church on Friday applauded a Supreme Court decision to buy the previous president and four officials to pay compensation for the 2019 Easter Sunday battles that killed more than 260 people. The civil case brought by families of the victims charged that lax security caused the attacks which targeted three churches and 3 luxury hotels. The church itself was not party to the lawsuit.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith told reporters he hoped the case would be intensified versus previous president Maithripala Sirisena and his leading security authorities.

Based on this verdict we expect this case to be taken forward, Cardinal Ranjith stated.

Justice for the victims will just occur when the whole reality comes out.

This choice is just a milestone in that journey.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ordered Sirisena, his police chief, 2 senior intelligence authorities and a senior defence ministry official to pay a total of LKR 310 million (about $850,000) from their individual funds as payment to the households of the victims of the battles who had actually brought the civil case before the court. The court said the previous president and his authorities had actually failed to prevent the attacks, amongst the worst in Sri Lankas unstable history.Several tourists were also eliminated and more than 500 individuals injured, mostly belonging to the islands minority Christian community.Sirisena and the others associated with the case have made no public talk about the ruling and he did not respond to Reuters requests for reaction. In November, Sri Lanka put on trial 24 guys implicated of carrying out the attacks.

Police filed over 23,000 charges versus those suspects, consisting of conspiring to murder, helping and abetting the attacks, and collecting arms and ammunition. The group consists of Mohammad Naufer, who officials state masterminded the attacks and is linked to Islamic State.Source: Reuters
