Official trade data from 2024 shows a dramatic shift in Mexicos car market.
Mexico imported $5.3 billion worth of cars from China, while it only sold $262 million in cars to China. This created a record $5 billion trade deficit for Mexico in the auto sector, the largest ever between the two countries.
Ten years ago, Mexico barely imported any cars from China.
In 2014, Chinese car imports totaled just $12 million.By 2024, Chinese brands made up 20% of all new cars sold in Mexico, up from less than 1% in 2017.
China now supplies about one-third of all imported cars in Mexico, overtaking the United States as the main source.Chinese automakers like BYD, SAIC, Chery, and JAC have rapidly expanded in Mexico.
BYD alone plans to have 100 dealerships in the country by the end of 2025.At the same time, global companies such as General Motors now build some cars in China and ship them to Mexico, adding to the surge.
Mexico remains a major car producer, building almost 4 million vehicles in 2024.Chinese Cars Flood Mexican Market, Creating Record Trade Gap.

Two-thirds of cars sold in Mexico are imported, and a growing share comes from China.Chinas car industry has become the worlds largest, making over 31 million vehicles in 2024 and exporting nearly 6 million.
Overcapacity and strong technology have helped Chinese companies push aggressively into new markets like Mexico. This shift worries Mexican and U.S.
policymakers.
They fear for local jobs and the future of Mexicos own car industry.
Some U.S.
officials have even suggested new tariffs on cars imported from Mexico if they contain Chinese parts or come from Chinese-owned factories. The numbers show a new reality: China has become the top supplier of cars to Mexico, while Mexicos own car exports to China have shrunk.
This change signals Chinas growing power in global manufacturing and highlights challenges for Mexicos industry. All data in this story comes from official trade and industry sources.
No information has been altered or made up.
This is the real story of how Chinese cars are changing Mexicos auto market and trade balance.
