VADODARA: In yet another incident of policemen stealing liquor kept at police stations after being seized, six persons were arrested by Bakor police in Mahisagar district after it came to light that high-end liquor bottles worth Rs 1.57 lakh kept at the same police station were stolen.
The arrested include three personnel of Bakor police station.As the case goes, Bakor police had seized Scotch whiskey and vodka bottles on the night of June 5 while they were being brought into the state.The liquor was loaded in a pickup truck from Chandigarh and was to be delivered to a person in Surat whose phone number was given to the driver of the vehicle.
The bootleggers had used 75 ceiling fans to cover the liquor stock.
In all, 482 liquor bottles were seized, along with the fans.Recently, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ranvatsinh Vaghsinh was asked by his seniors to organize the seized material and evidence in view of an inspection at the police station.
When Vaghsinh entered the womens lock-up where the seized liquor and fans had been kept, he noticed that the electric fan boxes were open and liquor bottles were missing from the cartons.Vaghsinh stated in an offence registered at Bakor police station that the lock-up key was with him but some other key was used to open the lock.
It came to light that 125 liquor bottles worth Rs 1,57,180 and 15 fans worth Rs 40,500 had been stolen.
When officials checked the CCTV footages of the police station, they noticed that police station officer ASI Arvind Rajibhai had entered the lock-up at 10.04pm on October 25 and removed a liquor bottle.
In the early hours on October 25, he had switched off the CCTV camera twice and after it was switched on, the cartons were found disturbed.A probe revealed that Arvind, along with five others who include two cops, had stolen the liquor bottles and the fans from the lock-up.
An offence was registered regarding the theft on Monday night.
All the six accused were arrested by the police and presented in a local court on Friday.
They were remanded in police custody for two days for further interrogation.
In August, policemen and others had stolen 430 bottles of IMFL at Piplod police station in Dahod.
The liquor was part of a large haul seized by the State Monitoring Cell.
